The Moenkopi Plateau was formed by Moenave sandstone sediments deposited some 200 million years ago during the Jurassic period. The canyons crated by this process in northern Arizona are absolutely incredible. Two of these canyons, Coal Mine and Ha-Ho No-Geh, are on the Navajo Reservation while Blue Canyon is a part of the nearby Hopi Reservation. These Canyons are wide shallow branches of Moenkopi Wash that drain large areas of the reservations and are tributary to the Little Colorado River. The eroded canyons create what are known as “Southwest badlands”.
