We headed for the Paria River Valley on our own to find a ghost town located east of Kanab. The valley’s banded hills of red, purple, white and gray-blue were awesome. This rare combination of colors is associated with what geologists call the Chinle Formation. As we neared our destination, the washed out road turned us back before we could see what was left of the ghost town, but the spectacular geology more than made up for this! Heading back to Kanab we stopped in Fredonia to visit the Red Pueblo Museum where we met Dixon Spendlove and viewed his extensive private collection of Indian artifacts.
