The symposium provided a number of knowledgeable speakers on cultural resources and rock art. Should you have a few minutes, you can find out about the presentations by looking for the Symposium Abstracts at www.utahrockart.org/ .

Of great importance was the Conservation Preservation Committee’s presentation that provided critical information on the Bureau of Land Management’s process to grant oil and gas leases for the San Rafael Swell. Federal bureaucrats were oblivious to the significant amount of rock art and archeological resources in the Swell. They had no idea what the gas leases would endanger or destroy because they hadn’t done the research to know where most of these cultural resources are located within the Swell! URARA’ representatives met with BLM leadership. Following URARA’s documentation of the cultural sites in danger, the leases were terminated! This is just one example of why everyone should join and support this outstanding volunteer group of concerned citizens!
