We had the good fortune to hike with Vaughn Hadenfeldt of Far Out Expeditions on a number of occasions over the past decade. It was a pleasure to hike with him this day to sites on Cedar Mesa. The first part of our excursion was into Road Canyon. As we hiked toward the Citadel, Vaughn found a small site in a side canyon that was in remarkable condition because of shelter the mesa above it and how well it was constructed.

The Citadel is situated on the very end of an isolated peninsula that extends out into Road Canyon. To get there we had to work our way down from the top of the mesa and traverse across a very narrow ridge. We then climbed over the remnants of several rock walls most likely built to defend the Citadel. The defensive nature of this site is most impressive. It embodies the concept of impregnable.

That afternoon we hiked into another part of Cedar Mesa to visit some granaries that are in a side canyon that merges into Johns Canyon. Here rests some outstanding granaries that once stored seeds and food. These structures are in remarkable condition and all the granary doors are in tack. With very few exceptions the granaries we come across usually have their stone doors missing or broken.
