We explored along the San Juan River south of Bluff looking for glyphs and the alleged mammoth now that the BLM had removed much of the Russian Olive and Tamarisk that obscured the view of the bluffs that had been cut by the river. We enjoyed the easy access and pleasant hiking along the river until Sharon lost her balance and began to fall down the steep bank. Because John caught her as she was falling, we didn't think she had been injured. We stopped next at Sand Island to revisit the panel that is fenced in on the west side of the campground. It had been a decade since we visited this site.

Later that afternoon Sharon’s foot began throbbing. We decided to make the run to Blanding to see what the x-rays would show. There wasn't any serious damage, but tendons were strained and she had to minimize hiking until her foot healed. This necessitated some fairly significant changes in our plans to see several other sites in Butler Wash area.

Coming back from Blanding we ran into one of the most intense thunderstorms we have ever encountered. The rain came down in huge sheets driven by strong gusts of wind as lightening ripped through the sky. Many of the cars on the highway pulled over, but we were fortunate to catch up with a very large truck that we followed safely back to Bluff.
