This day marked the beginning of some very unique and special hikes into the Petrified National Forest that reopened following the bizarre shutdown of the federal government that included the public’s national parks. We met our friends Nina Bowen and Joe Brame, Jo Ann Fite and Lee White in Holbrook and headed for Lithodendron Wash to track down some glyphs. Much of the rock art in this area is about 900 to 1500 hundred years old. It was made by nomadic hunter–gatherers. Semi-permanent settlements of The Pueblo people began around A.D. 1, who also contributed to the rock art of this area. The descendants of these people can be found living on the Hopi Mesas and in the Zuni River Valley.
