Between the irrigation ice cycles on blades of grass in the early morning out side of Torrey, to the last rays of sun on Capitol Reef, we visited three amazing sites. Our first stop was the Ochre Alcove Panel in Wild Horse Canyon that is John’s favorite site in Utah. The hike with Rod and Eileen Frazier and Mike McKenzie through the canyon’s unique geology was enriched by the unexpected. John was distraught because someone had scratched their initials onto part of the panel since the last time we had seen it.
That afternoon we made a brief stop at Temple Mountain to see the panel just off the road. The pictograph site has some of the largest sized, multicolored images that we have seen. They rest high on a cliff face that has partially exfoliated and some of the panel has been lost.
Rod and Eileen took us to see some very unique glyphs in a canyon near Temple Mountain that afternoon. The large and well-done Chevron Snake along with the other glyphs at this site are located behind fairly thick vegetation that has grown over most of the glyphs. It would be easy to walk right by them.
