Leaving Holbrooke we were in great anticipation of seeing world-class rock art sites in the Petrified Forest National Park but ended up extremely disappointed. There are incredible areas of petrified wood to experience and a captivating desolate desert landscape once inhabited by Ancestral Puebloans. What’s lacking is access to sites such as the Golden Disk, Coyote Den, Arabesque to name only a few, and a Park Service that’s operated intentionally to discourage the public viewing these treasures.

Canyon de Chelly is the complete opposite of the preceding paradigm and that may well be due to the way the Navajo treat the people who come to see this astounding canyon.
