Upon our arrival in Moab we got together with Dell Crandall and Claudia Berner and renewed our friendship. Dell had made arrangements with Liz Staub and Marny Tibmar to take us into Hell Roaring Canyon to see a pictograph site that some call the Comet Panel. Liz and Marny were great company. They knew that the route down into the canyon would be virtually impossible to find unless guided by those who had been there before.

The pictographs are called the Comet Panel because of what appears to be a comet accompanied by several anthropomorphs. Of course, that’s an interpretation subject to uncertainty because it is so easy to project our values onto the pictrographs and glyphs created by other cultures.

We were told the canyon’s unique name was derived from what it sounds like to be in the canyon when thunderstorms generate waterfalls cascading down the canon walls into the valley.
