We got off to an early start and were greeted with a clouds and fog that hung on the hills and settled into some valleys as we began what would be our longest day of travel during our trip. The day turned out to be rather gray, but we still enjoyed the views and familiar landmarks as we made our way East over a subdued desert to Utah.
We stopped at the “Shoes Tree” that was so rudely chopped years ago to thwart a local tradition. A smaller cottonwood now continues the tradition nearby with shoes dangling from its’ branches. After passing through Ely, we turned onto Highway 21 near the Great Basin National Park. This route provides awesome views as it traverses a virtually unoccupied desert into Utah.
