We returned to Sand Island and the site that we photographed the previous year (see our trip for 2011). This area is directly adjacent to the San Juan River. We were not aware that some knowledgeable folks believe there was a mastodon glyph at this site.

This year we revisited it with Nina and Joe and found the alleged mastodon. Not being experts, we couldn’t tell if it was a mastodon. If it is, this could help determine the age of the glyphs since mastodons became extinct some 10,000 years ago.

Our next stop was Bulter Wash where we found what some are calling The Big Bird. It looked to John like the folks who created the Wolfman Panel may have carved the Big Bird.

The last venue of the day was Comb Wash that we explored for glyphs primarily along the road.
